Associates Programme

The ICTP Associates Programme was created at the very inception of the Centre in 1964, by ICTP founder and Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam. Since then it has granted more than 3000 Associateships to scientists coming from all over the world.

Associate Programme - Work at the blackboard

Purpose

ICTP's Associates Programme enables individual scientists at different stages of their careers to maintain long-term formal contacts with ICTP's stimulating and active scientific environment. Researchers who hold a PhD and are working in developing countries are eligible for the programme.

The Programme supports regular visits to ICTP, where ICTP Associates have the opportunity to remain in touch with the experts and also with the most modern aspects of their scientific fields. This, to a large extent, helps to eliminate the brain-drain in their home countries and the sense of isolation.

Since ICTP Associate are active scientists in their countries, they are expected to play a major role in the process of building their scientific communities, enhancing physics and mathematics education at all levels, and planning research projects related to the specific needs of their region.

Programme Overview

The Associates Programme offers three categories of fellowships:

  • Junior Associates: promising young scientists up to the age of 35 at the time of application.
  • Regular associates: scientists between the ages of 36 and 45 at the time of application.
  • Senior Associates: scientists with an international recognition for their work between the ages of 46 and 65 at the time of application.

Fellowship Support

Associateships are six-year awards.

Junior and Regular Associates are entitled to three fares during the six-year period of their award for visits, which must have a minimum duration of 30 days (in order to obtain travel entitlement) and a maximum of 60 days, up to a total allocation of 180 days for the six-year period of the award.

Senior Associates' awards have a six-year duration too and a fixed allocation of funds. These funds are made available for visits in the form of a living allowances and/or travel expenses. During the six years, Senior Associate Members may apply to visit the Centre as often and for as long as they wish, until the allocation is exhausted, although the maximum duration of any visit is 60 days.

NEW: ICTP and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development have launched a support programme for advancing the capabilities of Arab researchers and students in science and technology. The ICTP-Arab Fund Programme supports scientists from Arab Fund member states who would like to participate in ICTP's Associates Programme. Up to 10 new Associate fellowships will be supported by the Arab Fund, allowing scientists with research or faculty positions in their home countries, at all stages of their careers, to visit ICTP for up to 3 visits over a 3-year period.
