STI's experimental facilities and laboratories

Next

ICTP's Science, Technology and Innovation Unit relies on experimental facilities and laboratories, including the following:

MLab

MLab is a Multidisciplinary Laboratory for research, training, and development of advanced scientific instrumentation. The activities of the MLab are focused on the development of scientific instruments and methods for the frontiers of experimental particle physics, nuclear applications, supercomputing, and multidisciplinary experimental research including cultural heritage and optics. The MLab regularly hosts visiting scientists, PhD students, postdocs, and other collaborators.>

The MLab scientific coordinator is Maria Liz Crespo and the technical coordinator is Andres Cicuttin.

SciFabLab

FabLabs are a global network of local labs, enabling invention by providing access to tools for rapid digital fabrication. The ICTP Scientific Fabrication Lab (SciFabLab) is a workshop area for ICTP scientists, visiting researchers and local makers, located within the ICTP campus. It offers training and tools for digital fabrication and rapid prototyping of projects in the fields of science, education and sustainable development. The SciFabLab is equipped with an ensemble of flexible manufacturing equipment including a laser cutter, a variety of low-cost 3D printers, 3D scanners and CNC milling and cutting machines. Use of the SciFabLab is subject to acceptance of a guest project and is free of charge. The Municipality of Trieste supports and co-funds the SciFabLab in its efforts for the promotion of technical-scientific activities and in the yearly organisation of the Maker Faire Trieste.>

The SciFabLab scientific coordinator is Enrique Canessa and the technical manager is Carlo Fonda.

Marconi Lab

The Marconi Lab is a laboratory for ICTP's programmes on wireless communications, Internet of Things and sources of ionospheric data. Equipment in the lab is constantly evolving to reflect the advances in those rapidly evolving fields. For training in these disciplines to be effective, research and assessments of different technical solutions are carried out and some of them are implemented in pilot deployments in developing countries.

The Marconi Lab scientific coordinator is Bruno Nava.
