The application deadline is 31 October 2022.

The QLS section provides a unique international, multidisciplinary research environment for postdoctoral fellows with about 15 group members (faculty, postdocs, graduate students and visitors), an intense programme of workshops and conferences, close collaborations with local institutions (SISSA, ICGEB, Trieste University) and internationally-renowned research institutions. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged, and supported, to participate in activities in developing countries in order to promote the mission of the ICTP and to contribute to the teaching activities of the QLS Postgraduate Diploma Programme.

Candidates should have a background in statistical physics and/or applied mathematics, and be able to carry active multidisciplinary research in any of the areas of the QLS section, including but not limited to:

    •    statistical physics of information processing
    •    stochastic thermodynamics
    •    biological physics
    •    ecology and evolution
    •    machine learning
    •    animal behavior
    •    computational social sciences

Candidates with expertise in theoretical aspects, data analysis and numerical simulations are especially encouraged to apply.

The take-home monthly salary will be in the range of 2100—2300 EUR (depending on seniority). Benefits include health insurance, a pension contribution, and special allowances for family members. Appointments will be made for two years, with the possibility of renewal for two more years.

  • Another post-doctoral position is available in the QLS section starting early 2023.

The research project focuses on the study of collective behaviour in bird flocks, midget swarms and bacterial colonies. The researcher will use machine learning tools to analyze and interpret data from experiments and active matter models. The position is funded by the Italian PRIN project "Response, Control and Learning: building new manipulation strategies in living and engineered active matter."

Expressions of interest, including a short CV, should be addressed to the QLS secretariat at qls@ictp.it before 30 October, with the subject line: "2023 PRIN postdoc".
