- Ramanujan Prize 2019 Announced

Hoàng Hiệp Phạm has received the 2019 Ramanujan Prize

23/10/2019

ICTP has awarded the 2019 Ramanujan Prize for Young Mathematicians from Developing Countries to Hoàng Hiệp Phạm of the Institute of Mathematics-Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology in Hanoi.

The prize is in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of complex analysis, and in particular to pluripotential theory, where he obtained an important result on the singularities of plurisubharmonic functions; complex Monge-Ampère equations and log canonical thresholds, which have important applications in algebraic and complex Kähler geometry. The prize is also in recognition of Dr. Pham's important organizational role in the advancement of mathematics in his home country, Vietnam.

Phạm said he was "proud and happy to receive the 2019 Ramanujan Prize," especially after watching a movie about Srinivasa Ramanujan, the prize's namesake. "I am very impressed by his life and great contributions to mathematics. He invented many mathematical formulas using his self-study ability."

Phạm has been teaching and researching mathematics at the Institute of Mathematics, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Hanoi National University of Education for about 15 years. "I know that mathematics has contributed to the development of education and science by the teaching of basic knowledge and mathematical thinking," explained Phạm, adding, "During the teaching, I try to prepare the best lectures possible to show students mathematical principles and applications."

ICTP administers the Ramanujan Prize jointly with the Department of Science and Technology (DST, Government of India), and the International Mathematical Union (IMU).

The prize is awarded annually to a researcher from a developing country who is less than 45 years of age on 31 December of the year of the award, and who has conducted outstanding research in a developing country. Researchers working in any branch of the mathematical sciences are eligible.

ICTP is governed by UNESCO, IAEA, and Italy, and is a UNESCO Category 1 Institute
