Master in High Performance Computing

The Master in High Performance Computing (MHPC) is an innovative degree programme that prepares students for exciting careers in the fast-growing field of high performance computing (HPC). Set in the stimulating research environment of ICTP and SISSA, the programme combines lectures with hands-on and applied projects to prepare future HPC specialists for academia and industry.

Courses are delivered by an international faculty composed by local HPC experts complemented by international well-renowned experts in the field. Practical HPC experience allows students to work side-by-side with scientific groups and/or stimulating industrial environments.

Who can apply

The ideal student for the MHPC has a strong interest in information technology problems driven by scientific research or industrial needs. An academic degree is required, although equivalent work experience may also be considered. Work experience will be evaluated during the admissions interview. No prior HPC knowledge is assumed, but candidates should have some experience in programming and a competence in one of the following languages: C, C++, Fortran, Python. A sound knowledge of Linux operating system is also needed.

Requirements

The ideal student for the MHPC has a strong interest in information technology problems driven by scientific research or industrial needs.

  • English is the official language of the Master: candidates must be fluent in English.
  • MHPC is accessible by Italian students graduated with “laurea magistrale (D.M. 270/2004)” and “laurea Vecchio Ordinamento (L. 341/1990)”. International applicants with a Bachelor, Master, or Doctoral degree are welcome to apply.
  • Work and research experience will be evaluated during the admissions interview, but they are definitely NOT a requirement.
  • No prior HPC knowledge is assumed, but candidates should have some experience in programming and a competence in one of the following languages: C, C++, Fortran.
  • A sound knowledge of Linux operating system is also needed.
  • A knowledge of Python language is assumed at the level of the first 39 exercises of the learn python the hard way.
  • Only candidates who completed the application procedure are allowed to take it in order to check if their skill fit what we require.
Entitlements

Scholarships available for students from developing countries.

These scholarships cover the MHPC tuition fees as well as the cost-of-living expenses and plane tickets from and to the origin country. The scholarships are provided by ICTP (not by MHPC), and winners are automatically admitted to MHPC. In case that you are selected, ICTP's Visa Office will contact you in order to begin the student visa process.
