The CIMPA-ICTP fellowships program "Research in Pairs" makes it possible for researchers in mathematics based in a developing country to come to Europe to collaborate with a colleague. It is expected that these two people will work together on a well-substantiated research project, mainly in the institute of the European colleague. We will give priority to candidates who are scientifically active despite a challenging environment and/or heavy teaching, supervision, or administrative duties, and who did not get many travel opportunities in the last 5 years.
The European colleague is a researcher holding a PhD in mathematics who will be based, throughout the candidate’s entire stay, in one of the following countries: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Switzerland.
The minimal duration for the stay is 5 weeks of collaboration with the host and generally an extra-week for recording/broadcasting 8 hours mini-course.
During his/her time in Europe, the laureate will record/broadcast a mini-course (approximately 8 hours, in French or English) on mathematics at master/beginning of PhD level. Note that this is an important part of the application as the lectures will become an exemplary course for all students who want to learn about this topic. It needs therefore to be prepared with great care. This course will be recorded during a week at Nice, ICTP or another possible research centre and will usually require an extra week on top of the collaboration period.
For recordings of past courses by CIMPA-ICTP laureates please visit:
The laureate and a colleague (not necessarily the host) may propose to carry out a project during a week at one of the partner centers located in the host’s country: CIRM for France or the Netherlands, CRM for Spain, FIM for Switzerland, ICTP for Italy, or MFO for Germany. For the laureates staying in Norway, there is currently no such option. The cost of the colleague’s stay (but not the travel) will be covered by the partner center according to its specific policies. The travel and stay of the laureate will be covered by the grant. In case the colleague is different from the host, a project and a CV are required.
If you go to CIRM, you can stay up to 2 weeks with your colleague to do the collaboration and the recording of the mini-course (and your full research trip may be only 5 weeks if you spend your time there with your host). It is also possible to stay only 1 week if preferred.
- Algebraic Geometry
- Differential Geometry
- Dynamical Systems
The candidate is a researcher who defended her/his PhD thesis at least 5 years ago and who has been employed in an academic institution in a developing country for the last 5 years at the time of the application.
If your country does not appear in this list and if you think that you should be nonetheless considered for a fellowship, please write to email@example.com explaining your reasons and we will inform you if you can proceed further.
The maximum amount of support is 10,000 euros. Alone or with other supports, this should cover all the costs (transportation, accommodation, insurance, PCR test, visa etc.) of the laureate during the entire visit. The amount is determined based on the length and location of the laureate. It can only cover her/his personal costs.
Applications for a visit between January and the December 2024 are open until July 9, 2023, and must be submitted through an online form. In order to access the online form applicants should create an account on the relevant CIMPA web page. If you already have an account, you can connect directly following this link. A PDF version of the application form is available, containing the fields to be filled out as well as additional details on the terms and conditions.
During the submission process, an email will be sent to the host colleague asking her/him to provide further details and to upload a supporting letter for the candidate’s application. Note that the letter is of crucial importance to evaluate the commitment of the host and the success of the application. An application without supporting letter will not be evaluated.
