ICTP Director Atish Dabholkar, along with Centre scientists, students and staff greeted a delegation from the Fundação Araucária for the Support of Scientific and Technological Development of the State of Paraná, Brazil, on 24 June. The Brazilian delegates were here to explore possible research and training collaborations. The foundation plays a crucial role in connecting academia, the private sector, and government to build a knowledge-based economy, and is highly engaged in globalizing Paraná’s research and academic ecosystems.

ICTP increasingly has been forging collaborations with international partners as part of its new strategic plan that is designed to enhance ICTP’s role as an international focal point for basic science research, education, cooperation, and outreach. A key pillar of the new strategy involves the development of an International Science Alliance of stronger relations with partners across the global scientific community that will help ICTP multiply its impact across the world.

ICTP's connections with Brazil are already significant. In 2024 the Centre signed an agreement of scientific cooperation with Brazil's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. In 2012, ICTP opened a partner institute in São Paulo, the ICTP-South American Institute for Fundamental Research (ICTP-SAIFR), which is housed at the Instituto de Física Teórica of UNESP's Barra Funda campus, fostering the advancement of basic sciences in South American countries.

Since 1970, ICTP has supported the visits of more than 5,600 Brazilian scientists to its campus in Trieste, where they have attended conferences, schools and workshops, or stayed for longer visits as ICTP Associates or as students in the Sandwich Training and Education Programme.
