The collaboration between the ICTP and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) is a shining example of sustained commitment to scientific development in the Arab world. This partnership, which began in 1981 when ICTP founder Prof. Abdus Salam signed the first agreement, has supported generations of researchers and scholars.
In 2024, this legacy has been strengthened through a new five-year joint programme aimed at supporting scientists from Kuwait and other Arab countries, opening more doors to advanced training, research, and international collaboration.
The Kuwait Programme at ICTP offers a broad range of opportunities designed to foster scientific excellence and collaboration:
- Support to attend ICTP Scientific Calendar activities: Arab scientists can receive support to attend ICTP's conferences, schools, and workshops (max. one-month stay). Here is the ICTP's Scientific Calendar.
- Diploma Students Programme: Three Arab students are supported to attend ICTP’s 12-month Postgraduate Diploma Programme, aimed at pre-doctoral science students from the developing world. Visit ICTP's Postgraduate Diploma Programme website for more details.
- Kuwaiti Post-doctoral Fellowship: For young Kuwaiti scientists who have completed their PhD and are working in Kuwait or abroad. Selected fellows award a research fellowship agreement for a period of one year with the possibility to extend for an additional year. - Kuwait Visiting Scientists Scheme and Training and Research in Italian Laboratories (TRIL) Fellowships: The visiting scientists scheme offers Short stays (up to 3 months/year) at ICTP for Kuwaiti PhD students and scientists. The TRIL Programme fellowship aims at allowing PhD students and scientists from Kuwait to undertake training and research in an Italian laboratory in different branches of the physical sciences for a period not exceeding 12 months.
- The Kuwait Programme at ICTP also includes a co-sponsoring of the ICTP's Salam Distinguished Lecture Series which is an annual presentation of talks by renowned, active scientists. The aim is to showcase important research developments as well as provide a visionary forward view.
This renewed agreement between ICTP and KFAS underscores their shared vision: to empower Arab scientists through high-level training, international collaboration, and access to a vibrant global research network.
