ICTP’s Filippo Giorgi is among the world’s most influential researchers
Research Success

Filippo Giorgi, ICTP scientist emeritus and former head of ICTP’s Earth System Physics section, has been named a Highly Cited Researcher by analytics company Clarivate for the third time.

Every year since 2014, Clarivate has published a list of the most-cited scientists in a wide range of disciplines. The list recognises authors of multiple publications that have ranked in the top 1% by citations in their field and were published in the Web of Science Core Collection over the past eleven years.

The 2025 Highly Cited Researchers list was published on 12 November and includes 6,868 individuals from more than 1,300 institutions in 60 countries and regions.

This year Giorgi has been recognised in the Cross-Field category alongside other authors whose Highly Cited Papers pertain to several different fields. This is the third time that Giorgi has been included in the Highly Cited Researchers list; in 2022 he appeared in the Cross-Field category and in 2023 in the Geosciences category.

A highly esteemed climate scientist, Giorgi is an international expert in climate change and climate modelling. He joined ICTP in 1998, where in 2005 he became head of the ESP section, a role that he kept until 2024, when he became scientist emeritus. Over his career Giorgi has contributed more than 420 scientific publications. He also participated in drafting the first five reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and between 2002 and 2008 he served as vice chair of Working Group I of the IPCC, which in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In 2018 Giorgi received the Alexander von Humboldt Medal of the European Geosciences Union which recognizes scientific work for and in developing countries.
