ICTP Success

ICTP is pleased to share the following news about achievements by its past and present researchers and students:

• Giovanni Tumolo, a postdoctoral fellow in ICTP’s Earth System Physics section, has been awarded the European Meteorological Society’s Young Scientist Award 2016. Tumolo was cited for his significant contribution to the field of numerical weather prediction, developing a new accurate, efficient, unified numerical framework, permitting a seamless approach from global to high resolution limited-area modeling. He has been at ICTP since 2011, developing the numerical framework as the basis for the new generation dynamical core of ICTP’s regional climate model RegCM. He also teaches courses in ICTP’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme.
• Jana Rodriguez Hertz, a mathematician from Uruguay and an ICTP Simons Associate, has been elected as regional vice president, Latin America and the Caribbean, for the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).
• Amna Abdalla Mohammed Khalid, an alumna of ICTP’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in condensed matter physics, was selected as a Next Einstein Forum Ambassador representing Sudan. Khalid recently completed her PhD at the University of Trieste and will soon be starting a postdoctoral position at the University of Göttingen, Germany. She was also a participant of ICTP’s Training in Italian Laboratories (TRIL) programme.
• Obinna Abah, another alumn of ICTP’s Postgraduate Diploma Programme in condensed matter physics, is one of the authors of a paper recently published in Science magazine (DOI: 10.1126/science.aad6320) titled ‘A single-atom heat engine’. Abah is a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg, Germany.
