APS Awards to Senior Scientists
ICTP Success

ICTP is pleased to congratulate two of its senior scientists on awards recently announced by the American Physical Society (APS):

  • Sandro Scandolo, Senior Researcher in the Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics section and Head of Scientific Programmes and Outreach at ICTP, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. This honor signifies  recognition by one's professional peers, with the full citation reading:

"For tireless promotion of young scientists, research in Africa and less developed countries, and decisive knowledge of the physics of high pressure systems and of solid surfaces.”

  • Joseph Niemela, Senior Researcher and Head of the Applied Physics section at ICTP, has been awarded the 2017 Dwight Nicholson Medal for Outreach, an award which recognizes the humanitarian aspect of physics and physicists.The award consists of a certificate, medal, travel reimbursement up to $1,500 and registration waiver to attend the award presentation meeting. The full citation reads:

“For outstanding leadership of the International Year of Light (2015) and for optical science and engineering outreach on a global scale.”
