TWAS Seeks New Executive Director

UNESCO is seeking the appointment of a renowned scientific leader and administrator to serve as executive director of The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries (TWAS). TWAS was established in 1983 by ICTP founder Abdus Salam.

More information is available at the UNESCO careers website. The deadline to apply is 12 October. TWAS is a programme unit of UNESCO.

The TWAS executive director is responsible for providing intellectual, strategic and operational leadership in the development, management, planning and execution of TWAS international scientific cooperation programmes.

The executive director manages the daily operations of TWAS and supervises its staff, as well as preparing action plans, annual programmes, budgets and reports to donors. The executive director will also provide strategic leadership for resource mobilization.

The executive director also helps to oversee the work of affiliated organisations which are hosted by TWAS in Trieste: the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP); and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).

The position opened after former TWAS Executive Director Romain Murenzi was appointed director of UNESCO's Division of Science Policy and Capacity Building/Natural Sciences Sector, effective 1 July. In the meantime, founding Executive Director Mohamed Hassan has returned to TWAS on an interim basis to manage its operations.
