Directors, Acting Directors and Associate Directors
ICTP is unique in its mandate, which involves not merely serving the global scientific community but paying particular attention to the needs and concerns of scientists from the developing world. It aims to attract the best scientific talents and, at the same time, promote and support world-class science in the developing world. Excellence is at the heart of what the Centre does.
It has been 40 years since the Centre has grown into a world-renowned institution, sponsoring research and training activities each year that attract more than 5000 scientists from across the globe. Over these years, the directorate of the ICTP has built up an institution that enjoys a sense of unity, thanks to their devoted scientific and administrative staff.
The following is the list of the Directors, Acting Directors and Associate Directors of ICTP:
1964-1993
Professor Abdus Salam was the founding director of ICTP and remained in that position until 1993. He shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics with S. Glashow and S. Weinberg "for their work on the unification of the electromagnetic and weak forces".
1964-1983
Paolo Budinich, Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Trieste, was the Deputy Director of ICTP between 1964 and 1983.
1983-1996
Luciano Bertocchi, Professor of Physics at the University of Trieste, was the Deputy Director of ICTP between 1983 and 1994. He served as the Acting Director between 1994 and 1996.
1995-2002
Miguel Angel Virasoro of Argentinian nationality, Professor of Physics at the University of Rome, was appointed Director of ICTP.
2002-2003
Erio Tosatti, Professor of Physics at SISSA, became ICTP's Acting Director.
2003-2009
Katepalli R. Sreenivasan, in addition to his position as director, was named the Abdus Salam Honorary Professor.
November 2009
Fernando Quevedo, a well-known theoretical particle physicist, was appointed Director of ICTP.
