Office of External Activities (OEA)


The purpose of OEA programmes are:

  • to initiate, stimulate or make applicable research and training in the fields of physics and/or mathematics related to locally available resources or local problems of specific relevance to the development of the region.
  • To form and strengthen national/regional communities and research groups by supporting institutions or national societies for physicists and mathematicians at all levels.
  • To enhance physics and mathematics teaching.

Under the ICTP External Activities Programme, support is given to activities initiated by scientists in the Third World and carried out within their regions through:

  • Affiliated Centres
  • Networks
  • Visiting Scholars/Consultants
  • Scientific Meetings
OEA activities

For example, since 1995, the ICTP's Office for External Activities (OEA) has sponsored regional workshops in mathematics for sub-Saharan African students. The workshops, which have been based in Ghana, have attracted more than 200 participants. Africa's mathematics community faces two critical problems. The first problem is that Africa's educational and research infrastructure is not strong enough to graduate a sufficient number of mathematicians with advanced degrees. Consequently, African-born mathematicians with master's and doctorate degrees have been educated in universities in the North. The second problem is that many of these mathematicians, after receiving their degrees, choose not to go back to their native countries.

OEA's activities in last years include ICTP affiliated Centres and networks.
