Help on using the new ICTP Website

Structure and philosophy of the website

switch to the new website

The general philosophy of the new ICTP Website (www.ictp.it, made public on 30 September 2004 at 15:00) is that it is mainly intended to provide public information about the Centre, its mission and activities, to different kinds of visitors: ones visiting the website without a specific interest or need and just wanting to know more about ICTP, and ones who are looking for specific information, maybe before travelling here to attend an activity, or intending to apply for it.

tinymenu

An "intranet-like" link has been created under the name of "ictp users" listing protected ICTP on-line services for the ICTP community. Users from inside the Centre, like ICTP staff, consultants, permanent scientists and long-term visitors would probably be interested in different kinds of information and may want to reach directly the webpages they need for their daily work. We strongly encourage you to set the home.ictp.it portal as a default site in your web browser if you belong to one of the categories of persons listed above. As an alternative, it also offers access to some internal ICTP services like e-mail addresses and Webmail after logging in with a valid ICTP username and password.

Fast hints on using the website

  • For a fast leap to the desired webpage, please use the sitemap facility. There you will find a structured list of all pages of the site, divided by category and linked directly.
A link to jump directly to the sitemap is available on all pages of the site, as an item of the "tiny menu" (the yellow one, on the left side, under the customization buttons).
  • Webmail facility:
The password protected Webmail service is linked from the ictp users page, or can be reached directly at its address: webmail.ictp.it
  • How to search the website: A search facility is provided to search among all pages inside the main ICTP website, as well as inside the activities calendars and portals (sub-sites). It can be reached directly from all pages of the site, clicking on the search item of the "tiny menu" (the yellow one, on the left side, under the customization buttons).
To search in the News archive, a specific search engine is provided on the ICTP News portal.
  • ICTP Phonebook: The ICTP Phonebook, a service provided by the ACS and the Communications Office, is reachable from the search page.
  • Links to other phone directories: The Communications Office provides an updated list of telephone directories on the office's webpage: communications.ictp.it
  • You can easily send e-cards to your friends simply clicking on the picture in the center of the Home Page. This brings you to the gallery of e-cards where you can select, fill and send any number of e-cards.

Important notice for browsing!

Macintosh users should please note that using the browser Internet Explorer 5 may result in a poor experience, due to some problems related to that browser (IE 5 for Mac is now discontinued and unsupported by Microsoft); the best browsing experience may be achieved using Safari, Mozilla (MacOSX) or Netscape 7 (both MacOSX and OS9). On GNU/Linux, the recommended browsers are either Netscape 7 or the latest version of Mozilla, and on Windows both Mozilla and IE 6 may be used satisfactory. Anyway, if you don't care about graphic appearence and advanced features of browsing experience (like dynamical menus, page customization and text resizing, etc.), all browsers are able to access the full information contents of the website, including text-only browsers (i.e. lynx, from the unix terminal) or very old ones. The website has been tested also with mobile devices like smartphones and PDAs and it works reasonably well.

Customization

Customization menu

Using the customization buttons (located on the left side, under the navigation menu) you can change the color of the page (default light blue or alternatively dark blue, for higher contrast) and the size of the fonts (small as default, medium or large). These settings are shared among different servers (this means that you have to set your preference only once and it will work for each of www.ictp.it, news.ictp.it, home.ictp.it, etc.). Further information about web accessibility can be found in this Documentation page.

Printing a page

You can easily print any page of the ICTP website by clicking on the icon of the printer, located on the right side of the path bar. Please note that the printed page is formatted in a different way respect to the one rendered on the screen. This is intentionally done to increase the readibility of pages produced by black-and-white printers. To get an exact copy of what is on the screen you may use a screen capture software utility or use the screenshot feature provided by some operating system.

ICTP News, Community News and ICTPLINK Archive

With a simple click on the news items on the Home Page you will be brought to the ICTP News portal news.ictp.it, where you will be able to read, browse and search all the news provided by the Public Information Office.
To reach the Community News and the Archive of ICTPLINK messages (and others) you should be connected from within ICTP Campus (or be authorized by login and password) and follow the links provided in the ictp users page.

New structure of web and email addresses

printer icon

A new domain name ictp.it has been acquired and it works now for the core of the ICTP website (www.ictp.it) and most of the others (like library.ictp.it, news.ictp.it, home.ictp.it, events.ictp.it, icts.ictp.it). In a short time, all websites of ICTP will use this domain.
At the same time, all e-mail addresses of ICTP can use the new domain and have the form username@ictp.it or name.surname@ictp.it. The old form @ictp.trieste.it is still valid but everybody is kindly asked to prefer the new one, particularly when advertising addresses on the web.

Technical information about the website
