Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics Section Now Hiring

ICTP's Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics (CMSP) Section has announced a vacancy for a research scientist. The deadline is 23 February 2018.

The candidate will develop and coordinate research and training initiatives, actively taking part in all activities of the CMSP section and in particular collaborating proactively to widen the scope of ICTP's renewable energy initiative. In addition to research projects, the candidate will also supervise students and teach.

ICTP's joint goals cover not only cutting-edge research, but also supporting scientific capacity building in developing countries. The prefered candidate will support these goals and establish extensive collaborations with scientists in developing countries and work with scientists across the globe to organize workshops, schools, and conferences.

Duties will include:

  • Undertake front-line research in the fields of atomistic materials science for sustainable energy. This includes studies of new battery materials, photo-electrochemical processes at oxide surfaces, photovoltaic energy conversion, and production and storage of fuels. Carry out numerical simulations based on density-functional theory in the framework of ICTP's activities in High Performance Computing.
  • Organize seminars, schools, workshops, conferences and topical meetings, and selection of participants.
  • Review applications for postdoctoral work and Associateships, Postgraduate Diploma courses, and short-term and long-term visits.
  • Teach, as required, for ICTP's Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Condensed Matter Physics.
  • Teach courses and give lectures in developing countries, identify and support promising students and guide scientific projects undertaken by students and young researchers in developing countries. Organize scientific meetings, workshops and conferences to be held in developing countries, and collaborate, as appropriate, with the Associates as well as other visitors to the Centre, especially those from developing countries.
