Prof. Florian Marquardt to speak
Upcoming Colloquium September 27

This Wednesday ICTP will host Prof. Florian Marquardt for a colloquium on the growing field at the junction of nanophysics and quantum optics. Marquardt is the head of the theory division at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, and will speak about developments in the field over the last ten years, ranging from history to potential applications.

The talk will be given at 16:30 in the Budinich Lecture Hall and will be livestreamed via ICTP's Facebook page. Refreshments will follow.

Marquardt's work is in the field of cavity optomechanics, where the goal is to exploit the interaction between radiation and vibrational motion, often at the nanoscale. The colloquium will cover both the current status of the field as well as two recent research topics, the study of topological transport of photons and phonons, and the optomechanics of superfluid helium.

The Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light was founded in 2009 and hosts scientists focusing on basic research into all aspects of the interaction between light and matter, from modern optics to photonics to quantum effects, and their applications. Marquardt leads institute's division of theoreticians, which was established in 2016.

The recording of the colloquium will be hosted on ICTP's YouTube page after it finishes.
