Mario Tosi
In Memoriam

ICTP was greatly saddened to learn about the passing away of theoretical physicist Mario Tosi.

Tosi, together with physicist Erio Tosatti, co-founded and co-directed ICTP's Condensed Matter Theory Group from 1977 to 1991. Many visitors from developing countries will remember and cherish Tosi's impact on their research, careers, and lives.

Educated in Pavia and active for a period in the USA, Tosi was subsequently a professor of physics in Messina, Rome and Trieste. From Trieste he finally moved in 1991 to Pisa's Scuola Normale Superiore, where he was emeritus professor.

An indefatigable researcher, Tosi made numerous well-recognized  contributions to the physical behavior of condensed matter  (solids and liquids). His research covered vast topics, including ionic solids and liquids, correlations in the electron fluid of metals, Bose-Einstein condensates of cold atoms, and much more.

A great educator, Tosi wrote influential books and reviews that helped raise generations of students, many of whom now occupy leading research positions worldwide. By them, and by his Trieste colleagues and friends, he will be missed.
