The Italian Physical Society is holding its 2013 Congress this
year in Trieste; several ICTP scientists have helped in the
planning and are featured presenters during the week-long event,
which takes place from 23 to 27 September.
ICTP condensed matter physicist Sandro Scandolo, one of the
Congress organizers, is leading a session on Friday 27 September
titled "Materials: new experimental and theoretical frontiers". His
session is part of a series led by ICTP scientific consultant Erio
Tosatti on the physics of matter, which also includes an invited
talk by ICTP scientist Markus Müller on "Localization and the role
of quantum statistics in strongly interacting Bose glasses".
ICTP scientist Claudio Tuniz is leading a session on physics for
cultural heritage, with a look at how physics tools such as x-rays
and tomography can help in archeological and art studies. The
sessions include two invited talks by ICTP Multidispliplinary
Laboratory scientists Federico Bernardini and Clément
Zanolli.
ICTP geophysicist Abdelkrim Aoudia has a talk in the session on
Geophysics,
Physics
of the Environment and Physical Oceanography.
The Congress also has events for the general public, such as a
roundtable on Science and Society as well as a talk about the
discovery of the Higgs Boson last year at CERN.
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Italian
physicist Bruno Pontecorvo, the Congress features several
activities, including the showing of a film written by ICTP
scientific consultant Giuseppe Mussardo and partially funded by
ICTP titled "Maksimovic. The Story of Bruno Pontecorvo".
The Italian Physical Society's annual congress attracts hundreds
