3D by the Sea

ICTP's 3D Printing Lab will be a main attraction this weekend at a public science forum taking place at Trieste's Salone Degli Incanti (the former Fish Market) titled "Trame di Gioco, Scienza, Futuro".

The Lab will display its printers at the event, along with a 3D scanner that can scan visitors to create a computer model that can then be printed as a 3D object. Lab activities, which will be offered over three days, will include free courses on creating and printing 3D objects.

Each day will be dedicated to a particular possible application of 3D printing. On Friday 2 August the Lab will offer an introduction to CAD modeling and 3D printing to create an object of common use. Saturday's course will focus on "Math-Fashion 3D", to design and print a 3D gem starting from a mathematical equation. Sunday, 4 August, will show how 3D printing can be applied to art, with the course "Sculptors of the Future" and an introduction to modeling and 3D printing to create an art object.

All activities will make use of free software and low-cost 3D printers, and will be used biodegradable plastic from plants.

The 3D Lab will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 17:00 to 23:00.
