Postdoctoral and Visiting Opportunities at ICTP

ICTP's Condensed Matter Statistical Physics Section announces positions for 2014-2015
Postdoctoral and Visiting Opportunities at ICTP

ICTP's Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics (CMSP) section has opportunities for postdoctoral fellows and grants for short-term scientific visits for the academic year 2014-2015.

The current research areas of the ICTP CMSP section include the following:

  • Disordered quantum many-body systems, quantum Monte Carlo simulations of ultra-cold gases: BEC-BCS crossover in strongly interacting Fermi gases, low-dimensional and/or disordered Bose gases;
  • Physics of nano-devices; statistical physics of complex systems and interdisciplinary applications;
  • Random matrix theory and its applications;
  • Density functional theory based investigations of structural, electronic and optical properties of materials, in particular in the field of renewable energy storage and conversion;
  • Development of efficient algorithms for the computation of electronic excitations in nanoscale systems.

See the CMSP webpage for detailed information.

Postdoctoral Fellowships 2014-2015

A limited number of postdoctoral positions for young CMSP theoreticians will be available starting in autumn 2014. Appointments will be made for two years, with the possibility of renewal for one more year.

Applicants should be no more than 35 years of age at the time of application and should have obtained their PhD after 2009.

The application form can be accessed online.

Additional documents, including a detailed curriculum vitae, list of publications and at least three recommendation letters (sent separately after submission of application) must all be appended online.

Deadline for receipt of applications for post-doctoral positions is 12 January 2014.

Short-term scientific visit grants 2014-2015

The section is also offering a limited number of grants for short-term visits in 2014. The purpose of visits is to perform theoretical studies in areas of expertise of the CMSP section (see CMSP webpage) in close interaction with the section's resident staff and visiting scientists. As a rule these visits may be for a maximum period of 1 month.

Scientists from developing countries are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to requests for visits outside summer period.

The application form can be accessed online.

Deadline for receipt of applications for short-term visits is 28 February 2014.

Applicants must submit their complete curriculum vitae along with their list of publications containing complete citations (all the authors, full title and journal reference). A short (maximum 1 page) research plan, for the expected visit at ICTP should also be included. At least two recommendation letters (to be sent separately after submission of application) are required for junior scientists, post-doctoral fellows and pre-doctoral candidates.

The decision of the Committee will be communicated to all candidates applying for the short-term visits as soon as possible after the selection, which should tentatively take place in March 2014.

In case of applicants applying with own funding (not requesting support), the above documentation must be accompanied by a letter of the home institute certifying the full coverage of all expenses.
